History
Gillis Elementary sits on more than 19.9 acres of land, and it is one of the oldest French Immersion schools. Opened in 1922, Gillis hosted first grade through eleventh grade with approximately 190 students. The first graduation class consisted of seven women in 1938. Twenty-three years later, we would host the last graduating class in 1961 with the opening of Sam Houston High School. As time passed, we came to be an elementary campus with pre-k through 5th grade. Over the years, we have seen Moss Bluff/Gillis area grow exponentially. With this growth, we have grown our Bronco family to approximately 700 students and 100 staff members.
