CLASSROOM LESSONS

Classroom guidance is an integral part of the School Counseling program at Gillis Elementary School. Classroom visits focus on topics dealing with personal/social, career, and academic matters. Lessons support building character and encouraging positive core values and traits including, but not limited to, fairness, responsibility, citizenship, trustworthiness, caring, and respectfulness.

INDIVIDUAL COUNSELING

Individual counseling with students is based upon teacher, parent, or self-referrals.

Is Parent Consent Needed for Individual Counseling?

School counseling is considered a regular education service provided by the school, so legally the counselor can see a minor student without parent consent.

School Counselors collaborate with faculty members, parents, and the community to help students have a more positive and successful school experience. The primary focus of the school counseling and guidance program at the elementary level is prevention. School Counselors work with ALL students and our goal is to help empower students with self-knowledge, positive interpersonal skills, and coping strategies for the issues that elementary children typically face.

There are many reasons for children to seek out their school counselor. Many personal and school related problems can have a direct impact on a child’s ability to learn. School counselors provide a safe and confidential environment for all students to help facilitate their academic and social success.
